What Is AEO? Answer Engine Optimisation Explained for B2B Brands

What is answer engine optimisation (AEO)?

Answer engine optimisation (AEO) is the practice of structuring your content so AI tools and search features choose it as the direct answer to a question. That includes ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, featured snippets and voice assistants. AEO relies on answer-first writing, question-based headings, schema markup and clear, verifiable facts.

Your buyers still search. They just expect the search to answer them. A head of marketing in Sydney types "how long does a CRM migration take" into ChatGPT. A procurement lead in Riyadh asks Google the same thing and reads the AI Overview at the top. Neither clicks ten blue links. They read one answer, and the brand named inside it gets the first conversation.

Answer engine optimisation is how you become that answer. This guide explains what AEO is, how it differs from SEO and GEO, what answer engines actually look for, and a checklist you can work through this quarter.

AEO in one paragraph

An answer engine is any system that responds to a question with an answer rather than a list of links. ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Google AI Overviews, Bing Copilot, featured snippets and voice assistants all qualify. Answer engine optimisation is the work of making your pages the easiest, safest source for those systems to quote. The engine wants a clear answer it can lift, facts it can trust, and a page structure that tells it exactly what each section is about.

AEO vs SEO vs GEO

The three terms overlap, which is why they get mixed up. Here is the simplest way to separate them.

  • SEO earns a position in search results. Success is a ranking and a click.
  • AEO earns selection as the answer to a specific question. Success is a citation, a featured snippet or an AI Overview mention.
  • GEO shapes how generative AI understands your brand as a whole, so it recommends you by name when buyers ask about your category. Success is being on the AI's shortlist.

Think of it as page level and brand level. AEO wins individual questions. GEO wins the category. SEO keeps both grounded, because many AI tools still pull from pages that already rank well. We covered the brand-level side in GEO vs SEO; this piece stays on the page level.

What answer engines look for

After running thousands of buyer questions through the main engines for clients, the same patterns keep showing up in the pages that get chosen.

1. A direct answer near the top

Engines prefer pages that answer in the opening lines. If your article spends three paragraphs on context before saying anything useful, the engine finds a competitor that did not. Aim for a 40 to 60 word answer directly under the heading that asks the question.

2. Headings written as real questions

"Our approach" tells an engine nothing. "How long does an ABM programme take to show results?" tells it exactly which question the next paragraph answers. Pull the wording from sales calls, support tickets and the "People also ask" box, not from your internal vocabulary.

3. Specific, verifiable facts

Models repeat what is quotable. "Implementation takes four to six weeks for teams under 50 users" gets cited. "Fast, seamless onboarding" does not. Numbers, named tools, timeframes, prices and clear conditions all make your page easier to use as evidence.

4. Structured data that matches the page

Schema markup does not force a citation, but it removes ambiguity. Organization schema tells the engine who you are. Article or BlogPosting schema with a named author signals expertise. FAQPage, Service and BreadcrumbList schema describe what each page contains. Keep every marked-up fact identical to the visible text.

5. Signals of real expertise

Engines, like Google's quality guidelines, look for experience and accountability: a named author with a role, a visible publish and update date, original examples and links to supporting sources. Anonymous, undated content is a weak candidate for an answer.

6. Access

None of the above matters if the crawler cannot read the page. Check that robots.txt allows GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot and Google's crawlers, that key content is in the HTML rather than loaded later by JavaScript, and that your sitemap is current. Some teams also publish an llms.txt file that summarises the site's most important pages for AI tools. It is not a ranking factor, but it is cheap and does no harm.

A 10-step AEO checklist

Work through this on your ten highest-value pages first. For most B2B sites that means the core service pages and the three or four articles closest to a buying decision.

  1. List the questions. Collect 20 to 30 real buyer questions from sales calls, support tickets, search console queries and "People also ask".
  2. Map one question to one page. Each priority question needs a single page that is clearly the best place to answer it. Avoid three half answers spread across three posts.
  3. Write the short answer. Put a 40 to 60 word answer directly under the question heading. Make it complete enough to stand alone.
  4. Turn headings into questions. Rewrite vague H2s into the words buyers actually use.
  5. Add specifics. Replace adjectives with numbers, timeframes, named tools and conditions.
  6. Add an FAQ section. Three to six follow-up questions with short, direct answers.
  7. Add schema. Article or Service, FAQPage, BreadcrumbList and a complete Organization entity, all matching the visible content.
  8. Show the author. Name, role, publish date and last updated date on every article.
  9. Link internally. Connect each answer to the related service page and two or three related articles, so engines understand the topic cluster.
  10. Check access and speed. Confirm AI crawlers are allowed, pages load fast on mobile and the sitemap includes every updated URL.

How to measure AEO

Traffic alone undercounts AEO, because the whole point is that some buyers get the answer without clicking. Track four things instead.

  • Citation share: for your tracked question set, the percentage of answers in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews that name or link to you. Check monthly.
  • Featured snippets and AI Overview appearances: visible in most rank tracking tools.
  • Branded search growth: buyers who read an AI answer often search your name next. We explain why in branded search and AI attribution.
  • Self-reported source: a "how did you hear about us?" field on your forms. When buyers start typing "ChatGPT", AEO is working.

Common AEO mistakes

The most common mistake is treating AEO as a formatting trick. Adding an FAQ block to a thin page does not make it the best answer. The second is writing for the engine instead of the buyer: stuffed question headings, robotic answers and fake FAQs that nobody asked. Engines are trained to prefer content people find useful, so the human test still applies. The third is marking up content that is not on the page, which can lose you rich results entirely.

The last is not checking. Many teams have never looked at what AI tools say about their category. Our 20-minute AI visibility audit is the fastest way to see where you stand before you start rewriting.

Where AEO fits in your marketing

AEO is not a separate channel. It is a way of writing and structuring the content you already need: service pages, comparison pages, guides and FAQs. Done well, the same page ranks on Google, wins the featured snippet and gets quoted inside AI answers. That is why we run it as part of our SEO, GEO and AEO work and our content marketing programmes, rather than as an add-on.

Start with ten questions and ten pages. Write the answer first. Then check again in thirty days and see who the engines are naming.

Key takeaways

  • AEO is about being selected as the answer, not only ranking as a link.
  • Answer the question in the first 40 to 60 words, then add depth.
  • Use real buyer questions as H2s and mark up FAQs, articles and services with schema.
  • Measure AEO with citation share and featured snippets, alongside traffic.

Frequently asked questions

Is AEO the same as SEO?

No. SEO aims for a ranking a buyer can click. AEO aims for your content to become the answer itself. They share foundations such as crawlability and quality content, but AEO puts more weight on direct answers and structure.

What is the difference between AEO and GEO?

AEO gets a specific page selected as the answer to a specific question. GEO (generative engine optimisation) works on how AI tools understand and recommend your brand as a whole. Most B2B brands need both.

Which schema types help AEO the most?

Organization, Article or BlogPosting, FAQPage, Service, Product, HowTo and BreadcrumbList. Use only the types that genuinely match what is on the page.

How long does AEO take to work?

Featured snippets and Perplexity citations can change within weeks of a rewrite. Consistent citations in ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews usually build over three to six months.
